Public transport on NYE
Does anyone have a guess on how many tube trains/buses will be running on 31 December and 1 January? Do you reckon there will be none, very few, some or enough to get one around?

I want to have a good NYE and would rely on public transport if it's running, but don't know if I should rent a car instead (I don't drink) so that I'm not standing out in the freezing cold for hours on end. The car, in the end, would be the same rate as taking taxis.

Well, if the potential strike goes ahead, there won't be any. But I've not heard anything one way or another about that in the last few days..

ps Reagan has posted something about the 31st but it doesn't say when that press release was published on the tfl site. It could have been from the beginning of December. Seems a bit out of date : /

what are you doing on NYE anyway?

I've still got no idea - if I'm doing anything at all still depends on whether I can sell some stuff beforehand, otherwise I won't be able to afford to go out at all!

It says "Correct at time of publication 12/05"
So it was published this month. The tube strike may or may not happen.. they're going to publish assuming it doesn't happen.

Every previous threat of a tube strike on a major holiday period like this was averted.

thanks. that is more promising than other stuff I have read but I suspect it is out of date since the publishing date is only 12/05...

Why does that make it out of date?

I assumed it was out of date after reading this
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/press-centre/press-releases/press-releases-content.asp?prID=635

the last line about them running services only if it is safe to do so...

and the fact that the RMT office closed on 24 December, doesn't re-open till after NYE

I was wondering if anyone had heard on the BBC if the strike had definitely been called off or was definitely going ahead...

Well, they never run trains if they think it isn't safe.. so thats standard boilerplate, and not something that can be planned for.

And as for the strike, again, its not something they can plan for. Either it will run as advertised, or it wont run at all. That will be decided at the 11th hour.

I think that what they mean by 'safe to do so' is 'if the strike goes ahead, there may be enough people who are not striking to enable to run a service, but this will only happen if the numbers are sufficient to make it safe'.

It'll be on the BBC site if there's any announcement about it.

From what I know I wouldn't rely on any tubes running, DLR and mainline trains shouldn't be effected and nore should busses.

The strike will be from 12 noon on NYE till 12 on NYD

The union closed their offices from Chrismas Eve until the 3rd of Jan, so in theory there is no oportunity for any arbitration.

TFL do say that they will run trains when it is safe, but in these situations this normally means a train an hour on some lines.

If you can afford it, the easiest, surest way seems to be a hirecar, but you may end up being a taxi service.... that could pay for the hire :P

I seem to be a lucky puppy as it looks like I'll be heading off to Dusk Till Dawn and Cannon St is quite close to Liverpool St and trains seem to be running though the night. I predict I will end up having some kind of lost souls afterparty.

thanks that is very helpful. I shall do my finances and see if it's worth renting a car. Your evening sounds good. My god, you have a vampirey themed nye going on. something you failed to tell me? or perhaps that's why i've never actually met you... > ; )=

I'm hoping it's a good one, hope yours is a good one too. Yes indeed, a vamp theme, it's at the London Stone that's one of those Ben Crouch pubs - I shall feel quite out of place I'm sure but it's Charlotte's birthday and I'm led to believe it's not gonna be 'all' vampire wannabees :)

Hehe, I'm certainly not a vampire that's for sure. I started my internet life on IRC Channel Vampire. When I went there it was all vamp... I'd turned it into a 'funk disco' in no time :P

So yeah, if by a strange stroke of fate you are in East London at about 5am on NYD and fancy keeping the party going, pop in :)

AH right, Dusk till Dawn is Thunder's night. Do you know him he is very nice. As for vamp wannabe.. well, there should be people wearing fangs. Was wondering why you'd be there but now I understand. My friend Sheridan should be there. Do speak to him, Thunder and Cecille if you can they are very nice people and should make you feel welcome. TBH, if I'd known about Dusk till Dawn earlier, I would have tried to go instead of B Movie.

btw I will probably be in no fit state to stop by E5 but how far is that from Hackney?

Nope I don't know Thunder, or anyone really on that scene apart from some guy Darren who I met recently, who is a terribly nice chap and has something to do with Vampire Connexion and will hopefully be getting me a DJ slot at one of their events.

I've met a few people here and there, but names escape me, so will no doubt recognise some faces.

I'm in E12, that is actually quite near Hakney by car, I think it can be done in 15-20mins, basically from Stratford drive towards Forest Gate, Manor Park, Ilford, I'm 10 mins or on from Stratford.

I am the afore-mentioned friend Sheridan. I also happen to know [info]demondaz. Whereabouts in Stratford do you live? I used to be in E15, halfway between Stratford and Leyton stations, not sure where E12 is though... For what it's worth I'm staying in Walthamstow over the NYE period.

Ahh hiya :) Gimme a poke if you see me and say hi, I figure I'll be easier to pick out than you :P Particularly as you know Demondaz :)

I live in Manor Park, right by the station, just a little on from Forest Gate and thankfully on the right side of Ilford ;)

Hope to see you soon.

Sheridan - any pictures you can show Madderz. Or do you know Charlotte? Martin, Sheridan has long dark hair like most goths but it's not black. Does that help?

I know Charlotte (the birthday girl), and Darren, and Thunder and Cecile, so we should know enough people in common.

I'm also tall, and may well have a beard, if I don't get around to having a shave :)

I used to work in Ilford - can't think which side would be the right side or the wrong side - but Manor Park's (officially) in London, isn't it? :)

Not that Cannon Street is not usually open on weekends, so is even more unlikely to be open on a public holiday during a strike (though I guess you were thinking more about Liverpool Street than Cannon Street, but worth bearing in mind anyway).
